Social value training

Do you truly understand what social value is, the impact your organisation makes and how to measure it, and apply it, to the activities you do?

HACT’s social value training is informed by years of combined experience of using, advising, and teaching organisations to use social value principles and  is designed to benefit anyone seeking to understand, measure and attach a value to the social impact of their work.

And, with the public procurement bill recently passed, there is now even greater requirements to measure and deliver social value within contracts and procurement more generally, meeting the challenges in how best to quantify and articulate social value is of real significance.

Social Value is so much more than a figure on a page. It is a commitment to create an impact in everything you do, taking it from transactional to transformational and truly delivering on your social purpose and the difference you can make to individuals.

Andrew van Doorn

HACT Chief Executive

What does the training cover?

Our introduction to social value masterclass demystifies the world of social value for you. Understanding what social value is, why it is important and how to measure it is key to understanding the true impact of your work.

The training covers the following topics and tools:

  1. The definition and principles of social value
  2. Current legislation and drivers to social impact measurement.
  3. The background to the theory and an introduction to valuation, and an explanation of the wellbeing valuation approach
  4. The role of activities, outcomes, and impacts within a social value ‘theory of change’
  5. Understanding social value metrics – using methodologically consistent social value indicators to demonstrate impact and a practical demonstration of applying this in a real life context.
  6. How to communicate your social value outcomes and reporting within your organisation and to inform decisions which maximise your social impact, and externally to unlock better finding opportunities.
  7. Examples of how other organisations have used the Social Value Bank to understand results, inform decision making, and improve their work.

What are the benefits?

Understanding social value is key to understanding the impact of your work on your residents and wider community. Our training session will give you the knowledge and tools you need to:

  1. Gain a better understanding social value theory and context
  2. Understand the Social Value Bank (UKSVB) and the field of wellbeing, health and exchequer valuation measurement
  3. Knowledge of how the UKSVB can be used and applied at your organisation to measure and demonstrate the social value you generate
  4. Understand how to practically use social value valuation.

HACT’s approach to measuring social impact is underpinned by Wellbeing Valuation which is endorsed within HM Treasury’s Green Book – the UK Government’s core guide to policy evaluation – as a method for placing values on things that do not have a market value through being bought and sold. Wellbeing Valuation is used by a range of leading authorities and central government departments including the Department for Business Innovation and Skills, the Department for Culture, Media and Sport, the Department for Work and Pensions, HM Treasury, the Cabinet Office and DLUC. It is also a firm part of OECD recommendations on wellbeing analysis in public policy and is used by other governments.

It was so interesting and really useful to put into practice on measuring social value in loans. We (Trowers & Hamlins) have already entered into a couple sustainability linked loans where social value is measured by HACT and I can only see this increasing going forwards.
