What's happened across our networks in November

A short update from the geographic and thematic networks from the Centre of Excellence for Community Investment who met in November.

Housing Association Youth Network – 9th November (future meeting dates here)

HAYN hosted presentations from two key organisations in the youth sector. UK Youth presented about the importance of youth work as a key method of supporting young people, and their work supporting youth work through funding, collaboration, and embedding youth voice in cross-sector conversations.

Youth Futures Foundation focus on promoting young peoples’ employment prospects through administering funds, research and policy work, best practice sharing, and collaboration. They encourage housing associations to join their Youth Employment Group to become part of a network of organisations creating opportunities for young people.

The group also held a round robin discussion on current priorities and challenges, as well as hearing about the wellbeing support staff are receiving at the moment to enable them to continue to support young people effectively.

Digital Inclusion Network – 10th November (future meeting dates here)

The Digital Inclusion Network met for the first time, with a very well attended meeting. The network heard from Digital Poverty Alliance about their Digital Poverty Evidence review 2022. HACT also presented on their recent report with Hyperoptic, which discusses the role of housing associations in addressing digital poverty.

Stockport Homes also presented about their work in the GM Social Housing pilot, a significant collaboration across the Greater Manchester area between the combined authority and six housing associations to make internet more accessible and affordable for residents.

Finally, there were breakout rooms to discuss where to take the network next.

Wales Network – 24th November (future meeting dates here)

After a break, the Wales network met again without speakers to simply reconnect and check-in, hosting a wide-ranging and rich roundtable discussion covering many key concerns at the moment, including the cost of living crisis, the rent rise in Wales, difficulties around mental health for both residents and staff, difficulties accessing food and keeping homes warm, and the continued importance of community investment services.

Racial Equality Group – 24th November (future meeting dates here)

The Racial Equality Group hosted a public Q&A event with Lara Oyedele, current CIH President and CEO of Black on Board. Lara spoke about her presidential campaign ‘In My Shoes’, which is about the importance of racial diversity on housing association boards. Northern Ireland Network – 8th December (future meeting dates here)

Following recent meetings to establish a collaborative communications campaign around the cost of living crisis and fuel poverty, the Northern Ireland network met in December to hear the results of the survey with residents. With responses from 100+ residents, there was more basis for discussing how the communications campaign can meet the needs of residents at this time. The network decided to set up a working group to meet before Christmas who will take forward the drafting of the comms, and report back to the network next month.
