Age Friendly Social Housing Programme: March update

As the Age Friendly Social Housing Programme progresses, our Age Friendly Team provide an update on what has been happening and what is coming up next!

Bournemouth, Christchurch and Poole (BCP)

As part of the Age Friendly Social Housing Project, we are looking at how community spaces can be better used by local residents over 50 years, particularly during the cold months when it would be beneficial to have a warm space to go to.

We have focused on a community centre in an area with a lot of social housing, and having spoken to staff at the centre and local housing associations, we decided to organise an open day to bring people in and hear their views. After 3 weeks of planning, 800 flyers dropped through local residents’ doors and many lasagnes being cooked we held the open day on the 14th March.

30-40 people over 50 attended, and after having a look at what the centre already offers and tucking into their delicious lunch, we spent time talking to them in small groups to hear about what would encourage them to use the centre. We have gained valuable insight from these conversations and will now start to work on our findings.

The partnership has agreed to support the provision of delicious free food for those over 50s at Peabody’s Darwin Court! This food provision started on 1st March and will run every Wednesday in the community café until the end of May. We’re excited about the progress we are making and what’s still to come!

Last month, Polly Anna Steiner, HACT Age Friendly Coordinator Bradford, was interviewed by Tina Watkin Host of Bradford BCB 106.6fm, to discuss what is the Age Friendly Social Housing Programme and how it is using the power of collaboration and listening to residents and members of the wider community to make a tangible impact. You can listen to Polly’s interview below. Polly will also be featured on the station again, updating on where the projects are at in Bradford and inviting people to our upcoming soft launches/ networking events in April and May.

Age Friendly Communities Network

We are looking forward to relaunching the Age Friendly Communities Network, and think that this relaunch presents a great opportunity to come together for an in-person event in April! You can read more about this event and register here
