This weekend a team from Travis Perkins will take on the ThunderWalk in support of HACT. We catch up with them to see how the preparation is going.
11 May 2012
This Saturday morning on 12 May, hundreds of people will gather in the Brecon Beacon’s national park to take on one of the most exhilarating challenges of their life – ThunderWalk 2012 - 54 miles of the highest peaks in South Wales to tackle in just 24 hours.
With just a few days to go till the event, HACT caught up with the Travis Perkins Managed Services Division, who have been training (and fundraising) tirelessly in preparation for Thunderwalking on behalf of HACT.
So why Thunderwalk?
The Travis Perkins Managed Services team has always got involved in charity events organised by other departments of brands within the group. We decided that this year we would organise our own event to raise money for a charity relevant to our business.
Why did you choose HACT?
We chose HACT because our business evolves around supplying repairs and maintenance materials to local authorities and housing associations. We felt that HACT fit our area of business; also we would be able to have a direct impact on some of the communities we are already involved with, through the contracts with our customers.
You have been preparing since last September, how have you found the training?
The training has been up and down (no pun intended). Some of the team members have found it easier than others, but we will give the challenge a good go.
I know there have been some injuries along the way, but any fears for the big day?
The main concern for the team is fatigue. It is a big challenge to walk 54 miles over night so the last few legs of the route will be a true test of endurance. The weather will also be a challenge in itself, due to the bad rain that has hit the country recently. But, the team is prepared as much as it can be and will carry on regardless.
And what do your customers think?
We have had good feedback from our customers and hope to work with some of them and HACT to deliver well needed projects with the funds we raise.
We have had a reasonable response to the fundraising and hope to be close to our target. We have had donations in several forms including financial donations, jackets and refreshments for the event and embroidery of the main sponsors on the jackets.. Thanks go to all who have been involved.
A big thank you from HACT!
Travis Perkins is fundraising for Self Help Housing – a project which provides business support and advice to community groups bringing empty homes in their communities back to life, revitalising communities and meeting local housing need. The good news is that our corporate sponsors are matching funding any fundraising meaning every pound raised will go even further.
So far we have provided advice and consultancy to over 150 community groups preparing to put in bids to the empty homes fund. We should know the results of these bids soon and we will then be taking our support forward, with business planning, help brokering and sustaining relationships with RSLs and Local Authorities, and organising peer support groups. For those groups who's bids were not successful we will support them in finding alternative sources of funding.
We believe Self Help Housing allows community led groups to:
• Become involved in resolving their own housing problems
• Gain experience in actually running an organisation
• Gain some building & construction skills, sometimes through on-site training &
• Kick start local street level regeneration
