New funding available to support volunteering opportunities

Sport England is currently inviting expressions of interest for a number of different funding streams to deliver their new investment strategy - all focused on getting people more active.

HACT and StreetGames are working together to support collaboration between the sport and housing sectors and a key part of this is to support local partnerships to access Sport England funds. Therefore we are highlighting the current availability of funds that can be used to support the work that housing providers do with their residents and the communities in which they work.

Sport England Volunteering Fund

As part of its strategy to get more people active, Sport England recognises the value of volunteers, both in terms of the positive experiences associated with volunteering and social action and the ability to access and engage with some of the most inactive in society. To take this forward, Sport England is inviting expressions of interest to two new funds focusing upon:

  • People from economically disadvantaged communities, and
  • Children and young people.

The Fund for Volunteering is intended to enable young people and people from disadvantaged backgrounds and communities to experience the positive benefits of participating in volunteering opportunities that are part of the delivery of sport and physical activity.

Sport England is currently inviting expressions of interest from organisations looking to provide new opportunities for volunteering, including from non-traditional partners such as housing providers.

Within the housing sector, there is also recognition of the positive benefits of volunteering, for residents, communities and indeed the business. For instance, the creation and maintenance of sustainable, resilient, cohesive communities with healthy, work ready individuals is a priority for housing providers, and the provision of opportunities for volunteering and social action can play a key role in achieving this.

Sport England has prioritised inactive people from social and demographic groups that tend to be less active than the wider population and face barriers to participating in sport and physical activity, including people from lower socio-economic backgrounds. As place and asset-based organisations providing housing working in the poorest communities, housing providers invest significant amounts of funds and resources in the neighbourhoods and communities in which they work. Housing providers are therefore well placed to support the delivery of Sport England’s ambition and objectives, matching their resources, reach and expertise to those of their partners.

With shared outcomes and a strong community and neighbourhood focus, the housing sector and local sports and activities based organisations can work collaboratively to engage priority groups, and test new and creative ways to increase volunteering and social action.

Time is short if you want to take advantage of the current opportunity for funding. The deadline for an initial expression of interest for the Funding for Volunteering is: Monday 24th April 2017.
