How we work

HACT helps housing providers to improve the wellbeing of people in poor and marginalised communities.

Those on the margins of society – the old, the poor, the newly arrived – continue to struggle for adequate housing in viable neighbourhoods. Their choices are limited. The services provided for them are often unfocused. And their gifts and skills are seldom harnessed to transform their lives and their communities.

We believe housing should be part of the answer. Over the past 50 years, we’ve helped housing providers to develop new, radical models of housing provision.We continue to do this by:

  • injecting know-how and resources to community initiatives
  • supporting local people to tackle local social issues
  • sharing experience with the social housing community
  • tackling inequality by helping local people and groups take charge of solutions

We work on a project-by-project basis, using the model shown below:

We continually use our extensive networks from the housing and communities sectors, as well as our ongoing projects, to keep an eye on ongoing changes, needs and opportunities within housing. We then generate ideas for future projects, or make refinements to existing ones;

If it’s a new project, we scope appropriate partners on a strategic, funding and delivery level, as well as identifying the requisite expertise from our associates and wider network of consultant;

We’ll usually test a number of different models within each project, investing our resources (expertise, practical and grants) into action learning, taking and managing risks, and then evaluating the outcomes;

We share learning from the project, distilling insights, creating tools for practitioners and influencing policy.
